Finished

Last night I finished the Doctrine & Covenants which means that for the first time ever I finished the ENTIRE standard works.

In high school I attended seminary for all 4 years. Each year we studied a different book: Old Testament, New Testament, Book of Mormon, Doctrine & Covenants. And each year I completed the assigned book of study except for Doctrine & Covenants. So last year I decided to finally read and finish it.

It took awhile, probably longer than it should have, but last night I officially finished it!

I write the date at the very end of the book when I finish so I can keep record of it.

I love that General Conference renewed my desire to learn & love the scriptures!

What the Picture Didn't Show

Truth is, I've gained some weight since I got married. Surprise surprise. The other truth is that I'm taking better care of my body than ever before. I work out, I eat a heck of a lot healthier than I did as a single college student and I get 8+ hours of sleep a night. So sometimes it's frustrating to see a picture of myself and think negative thoughts about the way my body looks. I wonder what all the people from high school would say if they saw me. If they'd think I let myself go after marriage or whatever other cruel thing we humans talk about for "small talk."

I  re-read this story from Thomas S. Monson tonight and realized it was EXACTLY what I needed to hear.

"A member of a womens organization once complained when a certain woman was selected to represent the organization. She had never met the woman, but she had seen a photograph of her and didn't like what she saw, considering her to be overweight. She commented 'Of the thousands of women in this organization, surely a better representative could have been chosen.'
True, the woman who was chosen was not 'model slim.' But those who knew her and knew her qualities saw in her far more than was reflected in the photograph. The photograph DID show that she had a friendly smile and a look of confidence. What the photograph DIDN'T show was that she was a loyal and compassionate friend, a woman of intelligence who loved the Lord and who loved and served His children. It didn't show that she volunteered in the community and was a considerate and concerned neighbor.
In short, the photograph did not reflect who she really was. I ask: if attitudes, deeds, and spiritual inclinations were reflected in PHYSICAL FEATURES, would the countenance of the woman who complained be as lovely as that of the woman she criticized?"
(Thomas S. Monson, Charity Never Faileth)
I can't keep anyone from talking about me. But what I CAN do is continue to take care of my body, strengthen my testimony, and continue to nurture my marriage and other family relationships. I am still beautiful. And there are lots of things that are important about me that the picture above DOESN'T show.

A 2 Minute Pep Talk: For a Bad Hair Day

Welcome to a BRAND NEW series on my blog! And even better, a VLOG SERIES! Things are getting pretty serious around here I guess you could say. ;) I'm excited to finally share with you something I've been thinking, planning, praying and pondering over for about 3 months now. Trying to decide how to execute it, the frequency of the posts, and if I really trust myself vlogging. So here it is folks, part one of a series of 2 minute pep talks, designed to brighten your day.

A 2 minute pep talk, for your next bad hair day.

So you woke up this morning and tried EVERYTHING with your hair. Whether you fell asleep on it wet, which leaves mine looking like Mufasa, or maybe it just won't do anything right because it's frizzy or oily or whatever. Just trust me, I know exactly how you feel.

In the most recent General Conference Women's Meeting, President Uchtdorf gave an amazing talk. In it he said, "Do you suppose it matters to our Heavenly Father whether your makeup, clothes, hair and nails are perfect? Do you think your value to him changes based on how many followers you have on Instagram or Pinterest? Do you think he wants you to worry or get depressed if someone un-friends or un-follows you on Facebook? Do you think your outward attractiveness, your dress size or popularity make the slightest difference in your worth to the one who created the universe? He loves you not only for who you are this very day, but also for the person of glory and light you have the potential and desire to become."

Isn't that perfect? Isn't that what every girl needs to hear when her hair isn't working?

I remember I had a friend once tell me that it is important to spend time every morning getting yourself ready. Making yourself feel beautiful, and respecting the glorious body you've been given. Then the second you walk out the door, you forget about yourself. You stop worrying about your hair and start worrying about other people. Service is the antidote to inferiority.

Don't worry about what others are thinking about you when you're with them, worry about what others are thinking about THEMSELVES when they're with you. Focusing on making other's happy will help you forget your own worries, and your bad hair day is just that: one. bad. hair. day.

So what did you think? Any 2 minute pep talk ideas??
