Fall Capsule Wardrobe

I've been on and off capsule wardrobing for awhile now. I really do love when I do it, and then I get distracted by a shiny boutique and the cute clothes and fall off the wagon. Then my closet gets super full, I become overwhelmed and I got on a crazy cleaning rampage. Today I did that.

I pared my closet down to 33 clothing items (tops, bottoms, skirts, dresses) and 6 pairs of shoes. Which is still a TON. And especially in the fall here in Utah that gives me SO MANY COMBINATIONS. I also pretty much wear the exact same stuff everyday anyway, so the idea was to get the stuff I didn't wear out of my closet so I could focus on the pieces I love.

Here's what the count came to....

+ 2 pairs of black leggings

+ 1 casual chambray skirt

+ 1 pair black work pants

+ 1 black pencil skirt

+ 2 plaid shirts (one blue & white, one black & red)

+ 1 pink casual dress

+ 1 burnt orange fancy dress

+ 4 cardigans (1 b&w striped, 1 navy & cream striped, 1 plain burnt orange, 1 plain mustard yellow)

+ 4 striped tees (1 mauve with simple black stripes, 1 mostly white with black stripes, 1 b&w even skinny stripes, 1 mostly red w/ black stripes)

+ 3 plain white tees (1 v neck, 1 crew neck w/ pocket, 1 basic layering top)

+ 1 casual star wars hoodie

+ 1 white and floral tunic

+ 1 casual tee from the Elementary School I work for

+ 1 casual "Fur Mom" tee

+ 1 chambray dress

+ 4 peplum tops (1 greyish blue, 1 oatmeal, 1 black & grey stripe, 1 gray with floral peplum)

+ 4 various chambray tops (1 blue & teal striped, 1 plain dark wash chambray, 1 plain white wash chambray, 1 polka dot blue chambray)

+ 1 pair knee high brown boots

+ 3 pairs of flats (black ballet flats, b&w striped flats, leopard print flats)

+ 1 pair of Nike tennis shoes

+ 1 pair brown ankle boots

So that's my capsule! I'll do some instagram updates at @brooklynjolley using hashtag #brooklyncapsules

I love using a capsule wardrobe and it really helps me have a lesser desire to spend money. I love my capsule because it helps me wear what I love and not feel guilty about it.

Also one time I read that men wear basically the same thing to work over and over. Black pants, white button down top, and a tie. Why can't women adopt that pattern and just wear a uniform? What if we did?? I do believe that fashion should be fun and can be really exciting and a great way to express yourself! However, I do think the idea of a "uniform" could be fun and liberating. Any thoughts?

Where to Buy Halloween Leggings

A bunch of my friends who sell Lularoe were able to snag a few pairs of the Halloween leggings capsule! I was so excited for them. I am totally into cheesy holiday outfits, so once they were posting the leggings I popped over to their Facebook pages to see what they had.

EVERY. SINGLE. PAIR. OF. LEGGINGS. WAS. SOLD.

In seconds! You guys! It is insanity. Now I'm seeing them being resold for $50, $60, $70+ dollars! It is insane!!

Of course it made me want some cute Halloween leggings, but not for that price! I decided to do a little internet research and thought it might be helpful to share what I found. So here are some places I found to buy Halloween leggings that aren't Lularoe!

+ Skeleton Leggings from Amazon

Spider Web Leggings from Amazon

+ Nightmare Before Christmas Leggings from Kohl's

+ "Creepy" Halloween Leggings from K-Mart

+ Jack O Lantern Leggings from K-Mart

+ Spider Web Leggings from Tipsy Elves

+ Candy Corn Leggings from Tipsy Elves

I hope this post is helpful! Let me know if you find some cute leggings for yourself, I'd love to see. And be sure to share with your other leggings loving friends so they can get in on the fun!

How We Wore It - July

It's 10:50 pm and I'm finally sitting down to write this blog post. My life has been such a hot mess lately that I can't even believe it. I mean, it's a good hot mess, but a mess all the same. One thing I love about waking up each day is choosing my outfit. I'm not even sure I have a "style" these days. Some days I'm on-trend, some days I wear yoga pants & a tee, and some weeks I wear the same 3 chambray shirts in rotation. I love these How We Wore It challenges put on by Deidre to push me to do a little more thinking about my outfit. You can pop over to her blog if you think you'd like to participate!

This month our photo inspiration came from Looks for Lovelies. Workout gear inspired.

I realized however, that I don't have a lot of cute workout clothes! I have some cute leggings, but not really any tops. I ended up going with a light shirt and black leggings like she did. But instead of working out, I celebrated the 4th of July in my outfit!

Hence the sunburn and the last minute poor lighting photos. Because this weekend was about relaxing with no makeup and reading my library books, and blog photos just weren't the top priority. I've been really trying to focus more on living in the moment, which makes for great memories, but sometimes crappy photos ;)

Me + Capsule Wardrobe

I came across the idea of a Capsule Wardrobe over a year ago while scrolling mindlessly on Pinterest. I was fascinated by it and it really resonated with me. I started sifting through my closet and created my own capsule wardrobe.

My capsule lasted about 130 days and then I gave up. I started buying more clothes again, buying more and more and more and using purchases to bring me happiness. When you're buying something it always feels like it's going to change your life right? Like that dress would literally change everything?

I do believe that clothes can bring us a lot of joy, let us express ourselves creatively, and give us confidence. However, I'm tired of once again relying on that "CONFIRM PURCHASE" button and USPS tracking codes to bring me joy.

So... back into the capsule ya'll.

I'm working on putting a summery capsule wardrobe together. I'm trying to decide how long to commit to the capsule. My husband just took a pay cut at work for a position he really wanted so we are TIGHT on money for awhile. I need to say goodbye to emotional shopping sprees and hello to more time with those I love. I want to spend my money and time on more important things. Don't we all?

So shoot me your best tips on Capsule Wardrobes and how to spend less money on clothes! I really like buying stuff that is going to last, but sometimes a $10 tee just makes my heart pitter patter. I'm hoping to not buy anything additional to what is in my closet right now. It's tempting to spend money to start a capsule, but if anything, I might just buy some second hand stuff. That's pretty Capsule isn't it? That should totally be a saying.

That's SO Capsule!

Pressing onward. Capsule Wardrobe 2.0 here I come.

February Beauty Product Reviews

I love the month of love! February can be such a dreary month of cold darkness, but Valentine's Day is like this ray of sunshine in my life. Colten surprised me with some flowers and some homemade peanut butter bars and I was in heaven. Flowers have a pretty big significance in our realtionship because he brought me flowers on our blind date and the rest is history. He is such a sweetie.

The purpose of this post however is not to gush about my husband, but to share some product reviews with you! I'll always be 100% brutally honest with you whether it is good or bad. So keep reading and see some of my latest product reviews.

Soapbox Shampoo & Conditioner

I was sent these products via Influenster to review. I'm kind of a brand snob when it comes to hair products (aren't all hairstylists?) and truly believe that salon quality products make a huge difference. However, I decided that since I was sent the products to review, I'd give it one shot and see what I thought.

I'll be honest, I didn't LOVE the products. And unless I absolutely can't afford salon quality, I will never purchase these again. In fact, I'm trying to find someone to pawn them off to. But, I will say that the products work better than Herbal Essence or Pantene if you usually go that route. I do love the company's involvement with charity work, and the smell is heavenly coconut. My hair didn't feel horrible after using them, but I really needed more moisture than the products gave me.

These can be purchased at Target for $5.99 each.

ELF 3 in 1 Mascara

I've been really trying to cut unnecessary spending out of my budget (especially with my new job change which I'll blog about soon!) and makeup is just something I don't want to drop $100s on every month. So I placed an order for some ELF products and decided to try this mascara.

I really wanted to love it! In fact, I love most ELF products I've tried. But this one just didn't do it for me. I didn't find it volumizing or lengthening enough. I don't wear much makeup at all so mascara is my focal point and I'm willing to pay more for a great mascara. I'm going to try some of the other ELF mascaras, and I'll finish using this one, but I'll definitely be layering with another mascara. The great thing about this mascara is definitely the price and the fact that it does not clump, which is also super important.

Purchase for $3.00 from ELF

Jane Iredale Powder-Me SPF Dry Sunscreen

About 6 months ago I was sent some Jane Iredale products to review and one of the ones I requested was the Powder-Me SPF Dry Sunscreen. The description says it will nourish, protect and soothe your skin with this 30 SPF sunscreen. It is also chemical free and water-resistant for up to 40 minutes.

Over the past few years I've become more concerned about using products that are good for my skin and especially using SPF on my face every single day. I thought this would be an easy addition to any makeup routine and in fact I have been able to use it as a finishing powder!

Next time I would probably just purchase the Purepressed Foundation as it already includes SPF 20 and provides much more coverage.

Purchase at Jane Iredale online for $47.00

Bare Minerals Correcting Concealer

I purchased the wrong color of this concealer which was so heartbreaking and I wasn't sure on Ulta's return policy so I never tried to return it. I have however slowly been using it on breakouts and discolored spots on my face. I find the coverage to be awesome! If only I had purchased a lighter shade, I think I would love this concealer!

Purchase from Bare Minerals online for $20.00

Sephora Pearl Mask

This face mask is supposed to "perfect and brighten with natural-origin pearl to create high luminosity". I had previously tried the Rose Mask and loved the results! I will say the pearl mask seems to do what it says. They can be a little tricky to use, but they feel great. I love to kick back and just close my eyes and meditate for 15-20 minutes while the mask does its job. Then you just rub the residue into your face with no need to rinse. My face seemed brighter when I finished the mask and even more so the next morning.

The bad news? It smelled like vomit. Like, broccoli vomit. Too harsh? Sorry, it's just the truth. The good news? It didn't smell bad until I took the mask off and was rubbing it into my skin. I'm not sure if I had a bad mask or what but man, I will not repurchase because of the smell! I will repurchase the Rose mask and want to try a few others like the honey and lotus mask.

Sephora Face Masks can be purchase online for $6.00

Smashbox Studio Skin 15 Hour Wear Foundation

This was the first fancy brand foundation I have ever purchased. For $42, it better work miracles. And it did! I loved the coverage and it was very moisturizing which is important for a dry skinned girl like myself. I love love loved this foundation and am so sad that I have finally run out. It lasted for a long time and a little goes a long way.

I'm not repurchasing quite yet because... $42 :/ But I'm trying out a few more budget friendly options and I'll let you know how those go.

Purchase from Sephora for $42.00

UNITE Expanda Dust

One great thing about my 18k cosmetology license is my ability to purchase hair products at a discounted rate! I've purchased and tried a lot of new products since starting hair school. I tried UNITE Expanda Dust after seeing a post from Julianne Hough about how she uses it as a dry shampoo.

It works! A tiny tiny sprinkle of this and you're getting volume like whoa! The higher the hair the closer to God right? This bottle will last me FOREVER because you only have to use a tiny bit. As far as dry shampoo goes, I've got a few I really like but I do also like this option as well. It's not a holy grail for me, but it's definitely a great product!

Purchase online from UNITE for $29.00

It's a 10 Miracle Hair Mask

This hair mask was designed to help hair that withstands heat styling, coloring and over-processing. This is one of my holy grail products! I've repurchased multiple times and always come back to it. No products has EVER and I mean EVER de-tangled my hair as well as this hair mask. I would recommend this for all hair types. If you haven't tried it, trust me, it's worth the money.

Purchase from ULTA Online for $30

Have you tried any of these products? What did you think??

10X10 Capsule Wardrobe

Early in July I went remote for my job at work. That means I still do the same job, but I work from home. This has honestly been a huge blessing in my life. As a total introvert, I love having a quiet home but still being able to connect with my co-workers and those I assist at my job.

I've loved how relaxed I can be at my job now. However, one thing I really miss is getting all dressed up and putting together an outfit that makes me feel stunning! So one of my goals for 2016 is to take more time getting ready each day and also documenting it more to share as a way to hold myself accountable.

So, for my first capsule wardrobe of 2016 I am doing a 10X10. Which means I only wear 10 items of clothing for 10 days straight. Here are my 10 items...

Red plaid: Kohls // Black & White Tunic: Old Navy //
Black Leggings: Walmart // Peter Pan Shirt: Rooney & Renee //

Chambray Top: Old Navy via Thred Up // Black & White Top: Old Navy //
Jeans: Old Navy // Blue skirt: Lularoe //

Blue striped top: Gap via Thred Up // Lauren Conrad Grey Sweater: Kohls via Thred Up //

ThredUp gave me some credit to use for this capsule wardrobe! As a matter of fact, if you've never tried ThredUp, click THIS LINK to get $20 to try it out. No catch! And if you use my link I'll get $20 to shop as well, so thanks for the love ;)

How We Wore It // Holiday Edition

Happy happy December! Today's post is another edition of How We Wore It! This is where a group of bloggers each use the same outfit photo to gather inspiration and create our own outfit.

Every month I promise myself I'll get better outfit photos than the ones that are dark lighting inside my house but ya know what, I work full time during good light hours and forget to take them on the weekend because I'm enjoying my time off. So.... dark lighting with Iphone photos from my husband is what we get again. Yay!

Buffalo plaid is super trendy right now, I'll admit, I am obsessed with it too. So I took this picture from Because Shanna Said So and made it my own.

My Sister's Closet Boot Cuffs + Favorite Things Giveaway!

One of my favorite things about fall/winter is fashion. I love layering clothes so they look comfy, cozy and warm. I've wondered for so long how girls wear huge fluffy socks under their boots/booties without buying a size larger in shoes. Now I know how!

My Sister's Closet Boutique asked if they could send me a pair of boot cuffs to try out and of course I said yes! I love trying out new fashion trends to see how they fit in with my own fashion style. I showed my husband the boot cuffs and asked him what he thought and he said they looked good, then I showed him that they are just cuffs and not actual socks and he was surprised, they look really good. I even folded mine over because I thought it looked better that way with my style of boots.

Today is an exciting Monday too, because I've teamed up with some of my blogging friends and we are each giving away a gift set of our own favorite things. Make sure to visit each of our blogs to enter to win! Each blogger has their own giveaway hosted so entering on my blog does not enter you to win their prize packs, only the one which I'm describing below.

I'm giving away a prize pack worth just over $50!

                                                               _______________________

Grey Addilyn Boot Cuffs from My Sister's Closet Boot Cuffs (valued at $6)

These will be a great addition to your closet. They make it so easy to have a layered look without having your feet smashed inside your boots. Plus they add a little extra warmth!

Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector (valued at $30)

My hair has been so healthy ever since I added regular Olaplex treatments into my hair routine. One day I will write an entire post about it so you can hear my whole opinion on it but for now click HERE to read an article about it.

Olaplex is not a hair conditioner! It is SCIENCE. When you get damaged hair from lightening, coloring, or heat styling your hair the disulfide bonds are unlinked. The active Olaplex ingredient re-links those bonds. It is patented and it is amazing.

Olaplex No. 3 is to be used like this. Shampoo hair. Apply Olaplex No. 3 generously to wet hair. Leave for 10+ minutes (really the longer the better). Shampoo out! (If you don't your hair will feel gross). Condition as normal.

You will LOVE Olaplex. Ask for Olaplex to be added to any hair service at your local salon & let me know if you have any questions. & please for heavens sakes do NOT buy Olaplex on Amazon. Buy only from licensed professionals.

Disney's The Princess & the Frog DVD (valued at $15)

How could I not include one of my favorite Disney movies ?! The Princess & the Frog holds a special place in my heart. If you already own it, you can give it away for Christmas ;)

a Rafflecopter giveaway

How We Wore It // October

I knew this months How We Wore It was going to be a little bit tricky for me. I'm currently living in a 10 piece capsule wardrobe and it definitely didn't give me much to work with! I was hoping to luck out and magically have all the pieces I would need to create the perfect outfit. Then I got this picture in my email...

Well crap. I ripped through the thighs of my black pants (holla at my curvy thighs!) and my gingham shirt isn't a part of my capsule this month! I really need to share more about my capsule with you, but that's not the purpose of this post. So I took a look at this picture and thought, "What could I do with my current capsule?"

I decided to start with a base of black leggings, because leggings run my world! Then I was inspired by the button up shirt, and used an oversized chambray top to get that look. Living in a capusle wardrobe is actually an awesome experience. It really helps open my eyes to how little we actually NEED to make it by, plus it's an excuse to wear your favorite tops over and over. (Like how I wore my favorite sweater 4 times last week. gasp! And no one even said anything or even cared. extra gasp!) I had other outfits in my closet that would've worked better than what I put together here, but I really wanted to stick to my capsule.

Chambray top: Old Navy // Leggings: Lularoe // Boots: Forever Young Shoes

// 5 Tips To Get The Best Clothes & Deals On ThredUp //

Awhile ago I came across a blogger who was raving about ThredUp. It's basically online thrifting. Lots of name brand clothes, new and used at a fraction of their retail price. J Crew, Free People, Old Navy, Banana Republic, Ann Taylor, Nike, Lululemon, etc.  When I first logged on I was overwhelmed, and can you blame me? There are SO many clothes to go through on their site.

Along with having so many clothes to go through, you have to remember that it is like thrifting. While most of the clothes they sell are excellent quality, there are a few tips I have for you to make sure you get the best clothes and deals possible.

___________________

1 // Use THIS REFERRAL LINK to get $20 to use toward your first purchase.

Thred Up is so confident in their clothes & process that they offer you $20 to try it out. You have to use THIS LINK to get the $20 credit to your account though!

2 // Shop "New With Tags"

Near the top of the page there is a way to filter by Size, Brand, Color and Condition. Under Condition click "NEW". Everything filtered under NEW is New With Tags, which is obviously going to be your best bet for getting superb clothes. These option are a little more expensive, but totally worth it if you ask me.

3 // Know the Return Policy

Once you receive your clothes, you have 14 days to decide what you want to keep or return. I ordered a pair of shoes and once I received them, I decided I didn't think they were worth what I paid. I chose to return them. It is a very simple process. You go to your ThredUp Account, choose the order, choose the item you want to return, and they print a return label. There is a shipping fee if you want to be refunded, but if you choose store credit there is NO FEE. You get all your money back in store credit and they pay the shipping back.

4 //  Double Check Your Items

Learn from my mistakes. I purchased a dress from a brand I'd never heard of, and when I got it I realized it was too small. I went to return it because I had such great experiences with returns, and realized because it was a SALE item it was non-returnable. Ever since I have chose to purchase only items that are returnable unless they are really worth the risk. Besides that pair of shoes which were super cute, just not worth the money to me, the dress was the only item I regretted. If you make sure that your items are indeed returnable, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. Their customer service is top notch!

5 // Share!

Once you receive your first package and you fall in love with the clothes and the company, you can get your own Referral Link under ACCOUNT > Referrals & Invitations. You can share that link with friends/family/twitter/blog followers/etc. If they use your link they get $20 credit to use to try it out and you get $20 credit added to your account as a thank you from ThredUp for sharing what you love!

___________________

In THIS POST I'm wearing a blue plaid shirt that is J Crew that I purchased for $12. It was New With Tags and was worth over $50! Total steal. Let me know if you get anything!! And be sure to use this LINK to get the $20 towards your purchase. No minimum!

HOW WE WORE IT // SEPTEMBER

I used to be more into fashion blogging back in my college days. My bestie Elisabeth and I would go out to our favorite spot and take turns taking pictures. Now that it's just my husband and I, I don't do many fashion posts anymore! Which is okay, but I also love how the How We Wore It challenges me to do at least one a month!

Our inspiration for September comes from this gorgeous blogger. I love the coral top (Like seriously, I need that exact shirt) and the jeans make it casual, but the accessories dress it up! I was mostly inspired by the coral top because I have a similar color in my closet.

Life with Emily

Drum roll please... here's how I fallified and Brooklynified this outfit!

Jeans: Walmart // Booties: Forever Young Shoes //
